DESCRIPTION:GOODTIME GOSPEL SONGS WITH ELLEN BLOOM \nThese are songs of hope and good news. Much of our popular music comes from the roots of gospel\, blues\, soul and country music.  \nNovember 22nd\, 1963 was the day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.  We will be remembering JFK on November 22\, 2025 when I lead the Plucking Strummers in Gospel and Freedom songs\, many from the civil rights movement during President Kennedy’s era. These are songs of hope and good news. DESCRIPTION:Our 1st meetup of the month is on July 12th. \nWe are honored and very excited to welcome Fred Sokolow to the Plucking Strummers. \nFred Sokolow is best known as the author of a library of instructional books and DVDs for ukulele\, guitar\, banjo\, Dobro\, mandolin and lap steel. There are currently over a hundred and fifty of his books or DVDs in print\, sold all over the world. DESCRIPTION:TRAVIS PICKING WITH ELLEN BLOOM \nEllen will be showing us two versions of Travis Picking for the Ukulele on June 14th.  One is Gary’s method\, the other is Ellen’s. Merle Travis invented this type of picking for the guitar.  It is a syncopated style of fingerpicking rooted in ragtime music in which alternating chords and bass notes are plucked by the thumb while melodies are plucked by the index finger.  Merle Travis is considered to be one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century.  We only have 4 strings on the ukulele versus 6 strings on the guitar\, so this type of picking is simplified. \nAll the songs are located here\, so there is no need to bring either the blue or yellow books. Or Gene\, for a copy at-genemazzant [at] gmail.com. \n9 AM to 9:45 AM –For this meeting Ellen will be again presenting her beginners workshop. She will share her wealth of knowledge to keep our beginners moving forward and enjoying our wonderful instruments. \nJadrian will share his insights into more complex chord structures and the feelings they stir when you play them. \nAnd as is now a regular feature\, Oneida will have the parts for making the beautiful Ukulele-leis that we distribute at the International Ukulele Festival every year. Our goal it to make at least 200 and if everyone dedicates a little of their time will meet that goal in no time. \n9:50 AM to 10:00 AM  -Breaktime\, and a chance to mingle and share snacks and refreshments. \n10:00 to 11:15 AM – This will be our classic strum session\, performing a list of songs chosen by our guest leader. \n11:15 AM to 11:30 – Second Breaktime. \n11:30 AM to 12:00 Individual performance time! I really hope we can get many people to sign up. I would love to see some of our new Strummers stretch their wings. Then we need to pack up and exit the building before Noon. \nDisclaimers: \nIt is very important to the church that we have completely exited the building and cleaned up behind us before the next group arrives. So\, depending on the number of performance signups\, we may or may not get to all of them.
