Some are very easy. Some will challenge you beyond your comfort zone. And isn’t that what a good relationship does for us? Kennedy was assassinated.  We will be remembering JFK on November 22\, 2025 when I lead the Plucking Strummers in Gospel and Freedom songs\, many from the civil rights movement during President Kennedy’s era. DESCRIPTION:Our 1st meetup of the month is on July 12th. \nWe are honored and very excited to welcome Fred Sokolow to the Plucking Strummers. \nFred Sokolow is best known as the author of a library of instructional books and DVDs for ukulele\, guitar\, banjo\, Dobro\, mandolin and lap steel. There are currently over a hundred and fifty of his books or DVDs in print\, sold all over the world. Fred has long been a well-known West Coast multi-string performer and recording artist\, particularly on the acoustic music scene. \nHe has led bluegrass\, jazz and rock bands and has been sideman for musical luminaries like Bobbie Gentry\, Jim Stafford\, Tom Paxton\, Jerry Garcia\, Jody Stecher\, The Limeliters and Ian Whitcomb. \nFred will be teaching bluesy songs and improvisational skills in the key of A\, a great key for blues on the uke. \nThe PDF of Freds teaching arrangement is posted here and the top of our Facebook page and on our website\, or you can email Gene

DESCRIPTION:Mitch will follow up on his presentation from last year of doing songs in common chord progressions\, but this time he will focus on 12-bar blues patterns in popular songs. No song list to be printed because we are going to learn specific progressions and then play along to popular recordings. He will add some techniques to emulate what’s going on in each recording. Playing along with recordings is something people never do\, but we’d get a lot better\, a lot faster\, if we did. \nMitch will also show us the ONE secret to mastering fingerpicking. DESCRIPTION:TRAVIS PICKING WITH ELLEN BLOOM \nEllen will be showing us two versions of Travis Picking for the Ukulele on June 14th.  One is Gary’s method\, the other is Ellen’s. Merle Travis invented this type of picking for the guitar.  It is a syncopated style of fingerpicking rooted in ragtime music in which alternating chords and bass notes are plucked by the thumb while melodies are plucked by the index finger.  Merle Travis is considered to be one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century.  We only have 4 strings on the ukulele versus 6 strings on the guitar\, so this type of picking is simplified. \nAll the songs are located here\, so there is no need to bring either the blue or yellow books. They had a resurgence of interest in the 50s and 60s but have tapered off noticeably in recent decades. Then we will break-up into two groups. One will be:\n\n\nA beginner instruction set from Ellen.\n\n\nYou will learn how to properly hold the ukulele\, placement of fretting hand and a basic strum. We will also learn a 2-chord song by ear. Along with that set Magda will concurrently be teaching a lesson on The Circle of Fifths.\n\n\nUnlocking (or freaking out over) the Circle of Fifths: A Musical Roadmap\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\nDive into the world of music theory with our workshop on the Circle of Fifths! This interactive session will demystify one of music’s most powerful (and mysterious) tools\, helping you understand key signatures\, easily find notes for individual chords\, chord relationships\, and harmonic progressions.\n\n\nPerfect for beginners and seasoned musicians alike\, you’ll gain practical insights to enhance your basic understanding of how music work. This includes tips/structure for songwriting\, improvisation\, and overall musicality. Join us and explore how the Circle of Fifths can change the way you hear and create music!\n\n\nThe presentation will include hands-on drawing/notation and using your ukulele. Bring a pencil (different colors if you have them.) If you have a notebook or iPad\, that’s perfect but we will provide blank sheets of paper if you need it.\n\n\nAll attendees will receive a free sticker. (Who doesn’t love stickers?) UPDATE NOTE:  Due to weather in Vermont\, the stickers might not be delivered in time. 🙁  – Magda (Don’t worry I have Version 1.0 stickers\, if the new ones don’t come in.)\n\n\n\n9:50 AM to 10:00 AM -Breaktime\, and a chance to mingle and share snacks and refreshments.\n\n\n10:00 to 11:15 AM – This will be our classic strum session\, performing a list of songs chosen by our guest leader.\n\n\n11:15 AM to 11:30 – Second Breaktime.\n\n\n11:30 AM to 12:00 Individual performance time! I really hope we can get many people to sign up. I would love to see some of our new Strummers stretch their wings. SUMMARY:First Meetup of  the year - January 11\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Before our scheduled strum time\, Ellen will be teaching us the Carter Scratch. This is a guitar technique named after Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family that we will apply to our Low G-stringed ukuleles. Many of our American Folk Songs will utilize this distinctive strum.\n  \n\n\nAt 10 am Ellen will be leading us through a few decades of AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC\, the music of the PEOPLE. This is a broad category of music including bluegrass\, gospel\, old timey\, jug band\, Appalachian folk\, blues\, and labor/protest songs. It was a new kind of music\, originating in North America.
